Sick Tummy Recipe
As I was putting my son to bed last night, after reading to him from his construction vehicle book and tucking him in, I lay next to him for a few beats and his breath started to deepen. Then all of a sudden he began to cry forcefully and said:
“My throat hurts, my throat hurts!”
He promptly vomited, well, blew major chunks describes it better, all over his bed, pillow and head. I called for his dad to come in and help me contain the grossness and help my boy get clean and warm, and upon walking in to the room, he almost vomited too. Ten minutes later the bedding and clothing was stripped and in the washing machine, my kiddo was in our bed watching The Gruffalo’s Child, and he had no further complaints until 2:00am when he sat straight up in bed, and I knew something else was coming. Phew. Ugly night. He woke up in the morning with a slight appetite and in an all right mood, and so far there has been no further leaking or projectile activity.
So here’s what I am giving him, and just how I would administer to myself if I were down with the crud, and I am confident it is working and will continue to help him mend:
Rinsed and boiled basmati rice w/ bay leaf & a pinch of sea salt
1. Children’s tea is Davidson’s brand
2. Honey (raw honey is best)
3. My favorite Basmati rice is Tilda brand, which I got from Krishna Indian Grocery in Poughkeepsie, but if you’re in the city, Kalustyan’s has.

1. Rinsing & cooking rice
Put 2 – 3 cups of rice in the thick bottomed pot in the sink
Run a stream of water into the pot, and work with your hands to get all kernels at the bottom of the pot then rinse excess water off the top a few times.
Run a thin stream of water into the pot and let water run off for 2 – 5 minutes (the more you rinse the more starch will be released, making your rice less sticky and giving it a lower glycemic index).
Drain water and refill pot with filtered or spring water to cover rice by 4 inches.
Put on high heat, adding sea salt and 1 bay leaf
Stir occasionally as it comes to a boil to make sure it is not sticking
When it comes to a boil, reduce heat to medium / low
Continue to cook for 12 minutes uncovered, adding more water if it absorbs beyond a soupy quality
Cover and take off heat, let sit for 10 minutes.
Core, peel and dice 2 organic apples
Place in a small pot with spring water bring to a boil
Reduce heat and cook on low for 10 – 12 minutes.
Strain apple chunks & either mush with a fork, or put in a food processor to blend
Add cinnamon, but avoid sweetener while your tummy is upset
Serving it up:
Serve plain initially, you can continue to add water to keep it at a soupy consistency if preferred (better for smaller children)
After there have been no more gut-related events for at least 8 hours, you can start to add miso broth to the soupy rice—just dissolve a teaspoon of miso into boiling spring water, and add to your bowl of rice
2. Applesauce (or banana)
serve with the soupy rice
Honey is fine to add to tea or applesauce once there have been no more gut-related events for at least 12 hours.
